Brake pads are widely used on motorcycles, trucks, bicycles, railways and various industrial clamps. They are an important part of the braking system of all kinds of vehicles equipped with drum or disc brakes, so that the brake disc of the exercising or moving machinery or car touches the brake pads and reduces the speed, thus making the wheels or machinery stop running and achieving the effect of braking. A brake pad is a steel support plate with a friction material on the side facing the drum brake or disc.

Brake pads are essential for safe stopping. The number of brake pads on a car depends on the make and model of the car.

How Many Brake Pads Are There Per Wheel?

A car's braking system is essential and consists of several different components. The brakes are made of a hydraulic system, which means that when you press the brake pedal, brake fluid is delivered to the pistons in the calipers. The pressure behind the calipers causes them to push the brake pads against the discs, creating friction to slow the wheels.

If your car uses disc brakes (as most modern vehicles do), the braking system consists of a disc that is attached to the wheel and rotates at the same speed, a caliper, and two brake pads.

Older cars used drum brakes to slow the vehicle down; instead of using brake pads, these cars relied on the brake shoes to apply pressure.

If your car has disc brakes on the front wheels and drum brakes on the rear wheels, your car will have only four OEM brake pads. However, since each wheel with disc brakes has 2 pads, if all four wheels used these brakes, there would be a total of 8 pads.
